Aftercare
How to care for a new tattoo:
Transparent Adhesive Dressing
Day of your tattoo:
-
Leave your tattoo covered for at least 3 days, no more than 6 days. You may remove the dressing sooner if fluid is puddling excessively underneath or if the dressing is falling off.
-
Avoid swimming, submerging, or soaking your tattoo for the next 2 weeks.
Days 1-3:
-
If your dressing is intact, do nothing until days 3-6.
-
If your dressing has come off or you did not use an adhesive dressing, proceed with Days 3-6 instructions.
Days 3-6:
-
Wash your hands. Always wash your hands before touching a healing tattoo.
-
Remove your bandage in the shower. Run water over the bandage to saturate and slowly remove the saturated bandage. DO NOT REMOVE WHEN DRY. This could remove pigment.
-
Gently wash the tattoo 4-6 times daily with mild liquid soap and water, using only your hand.
-
Pat dry with a clean towel or paper towel.
-
Apply a thin layer of the provided ointment 4-6 times per day after washing, or whenever the tattoo seems dry.
-
Flakes of color may start coming off at this stage. This is normal. Allow them to come off naturally. Do not pick off scabs. Removing scabs can remove color from your tattoo.
Days 7-14:
-
Continue to wash daily, or more often as needed.
-
At this point, you can switch to a fragrance free lotion, or continue with the A&D ointment, as needed whenever your tattoo seems dry.
-
It is normal for a tattoo to be itchy at this stage. Do not scratch.
Day 15 onward:
-
Continue using lotion when your tattoo looks dry.
-
The tattoo will have a shiny appearance for a few more weeks until it is completely healed.
-
Apply sunscreen to your tattoo to avoid breakdown of pigments by ultraviolet light and extend the life and vibrancy of your tattoo.
-
If you experience any excessive redness, itching, swelling, or blistering, stop using the A&D or other aftercare product and contact your artist. You may be reacting to the aftercare product.
-
If you have excessive redness and drainage, swelling, tenderness, or red streaks, or elevated temperature, contact your physician immediately. You may need medical attention.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact your artist.
